OFFICIALLY: Indonesia will host the 2021 FIFA World Cup for U-20 players

Indonesia has won the bid to host the 2021 FIFA U20 World Cup, beating out bids from Brazil and Peru, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has confirmed.

The decision was made through the quarterly FIFA Council meeting held the opposite day in Shanghai, China.

Indonesia was amongst three Southeast Asian countries bidding to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup, however the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) decided to withdraw their joint bid in August 2019, making Indonesia is the one bidder from ASEAN.

“We are naturally very happy that Indonesia has emerged as ASEAN’s sole candidate to host the 2021 FIFA U20 World Cup,” said PSSI Secretary General and Vice-President of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Ratu Tisha Destria on the time.

FIFA initially received bids from eight countries to host the 2021 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but the ultimate stages saw competition from Indonesia, Brazil and Peru.

The Bahrain Football Association, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Football Association were also hoping to host the tournament as a part of a joint bid.

Indonesia, hosting the FIFA U-20 World Cup, will even strengthen ASEAN’s proposed joint bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
