The latest Southeast Asian airline to make flying to the region higher (and cheaper!)

Vietnam may soon get a brand new airline that may make flying to the country easier (and possibly cheaper) than it’s now.

The still-nascent Bamboo Airways may not yet have an aviation license – the official government approval it must operate – but Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport will soon “issue a license to conduct air transport activities in accordance with the law,” the report said. Reuters.

The startup airline plans to start flights to Vietnam later this 12 months – or possibly in early 2019 – with Hanoi as its hub, after which added routes to China, Japan, Korea, in line with their website and eventually to the United States.

Bamboo says it is going to serve destinations equivalent to the coastal Quy Nhon, 20 hours’ drive south of Hanoi; Quang Ninh, the province where the gorgeous Halong Bay is positioned; and Hai Phong, a city two hours’ drive east of Hanoi, known for its French colonial architecture.

And while Bamboo flights between the U.S. and Vietnam should still be years away, American travelers have reason to be excited concerning the airline. “As someone planning a trip, I’m most excited about their center in Quy Nhon,” says Nathan Lane, Vietnam travel specialist at Butterfield & Robinson.

“I often thought it was fantastic and [under-visited] destination in Vietnam. There are some nice hotels and the walking, cycling and beach activities in this town are great.” Lane says he was often hesitant to send travelers there since the journey from almost anywhere is long; The ability to reach by plane will likely be a game changer for this stretch of Vietnam’s coast, he says.
