Indonesia aspires to be an electrical vehicle powerhouse in Southeast Asia

Indonesia is poised to change into an EV export hub in Southeast Asia. Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said on Tuesday that the primary phase of production of 1,000 cars and buses would start next 12 months.
The production means of electric vehicles will begin in March next 12 months on the South Korean company PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, whose factory is being inbuilt the Cikarang industrial zone east of the capital Jakarta.

“The production of electric vehicles is a showcase of our industry moving towards environmentally friendly industries, besides sending a signal to the international community that Indonesia is ready to become a major hub for electric vehicle exports in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and surrounding areas in region,” Kartasasmita said in an announcement.

The Southeast Asian country plans to provide 600,000 electric cars and buses by 2030, and this production is estimated to scale back carbon dioxide emissions by 2.7 million tonnes.
This is according to Indonesia’s goal to scale back greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030.
In September, construction of an electrical vehicle battery factory began in West Java with an investment of $1.1 billion as a part of cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea. The factory will start operating in 2022.
