The latest prime minister announced that he would invite the opposition to affix the National Reconstruction Council and the commission to fight Covid-19.
“Political stability must be achieved quickly through unity, which includes inter-party cooperation,” he said.
Many see Ismail’s appointment as a return to the established order. He was deputy prime minister in the federal government of Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned on Monday after lower than 18 months in office as infighting in his coalition cost him majority support.
Ismail has sought to distance himself from Muhyiddin’s government, which has blamed itself for its failure to contain the pandemic despite a seven-month state of emergency and lockdown since June.
Ismail won the support of 114 lawmakers for a narrow majority – one which also returned Muhyiddin’s alliance to power and restored Ismail’s United Malays National Organization (Umno) prime minister. The party has led Malaysia since independence from Britain in 1957, but was ousted within the 2018 elections amid a multibillion-dollar financial scandal.
The number of latest infections has greater than doubled since June, reaching a record 23,564 on Friday, bringing the full variety of cases within the country to greater than 1.5 million. The death toll rose to over 13,000. Due to the lockdown, the central bank lowered its estimated growth forecast for this 12 months to 3-4 percent.

Ismail said he understands that society is suffering as 1000’s of individuals have lost their livelihoods. He said his government would introduce latest policies geared toward increasing purchasing power and strengthening the private sector.
“Together, as one big Malaysian family, allow us to work to revive Malaysia to the extent of prosperity we were all once accustomed to. I promise to cooperate with people,” he said.
Muhyiddin pulled his party out of the reformist alliance that won the 2018 elections and formed a brand new government in March 2020 with Umno and a number of other other parties.
But Umno was unhappy that it was playing second fiddle to Muhyiddin’s smaller group. Ultimately, 15 Umno lawmakers withdrew support for Muhyiddin, resulting in the autumn of his government.
