Earlier this yr, camera traps spotted a healthy male Sumatran tiger atop a mountain ridge in Indonesia.
The camera traps are a collaboration between WWF and the Riau Forestry Department, which goals to assist discover species present in the region.
Cameras, a crucial tool for nature conservation, are equipped with infrared sensors that take photos as soon as they detect movement within the forest.
In March 2017, roughly 18 cameras were strategically installed to support WWF’s intensive tiger monitoring in Central Sumatra.
“This is the first time we have captured such a beautiful image of a tiger here. I feel like our hard work has already paid off at the sight of this majestic creature roaming the island,” said Febri Anggriawan, WWF-Indonesia Tiger Research Coordinator who led the study.
WWF is working with the Indonesian government and conservation partners to strengthen law enforcement and anti-poaching efforts and slow deforestation of remaining habitats.
