Youn Sung-ho, who goes by the stage name NewJeansNim, is a comedian-turned-musician. He is credited with restoring the recognition of Buddhism amongst young South Koreans – although his performances caused a stir within the region.
He was scheduled to perform at a nightclub in Singapore, where the law prohibits speech and actions considered harmful to non secular harmony.
“Police told nightclub owners that motion can be taken if the performance continued. They understood our position and agreed to cooperate,” K. Shanmugam wrote on his Facebook.
“This news got here out on Vesak Day, it’s an unlucky coincidence. But the Buddhist community (like other communities) knows that the federal government will take strong motion on such matters,” he added, referring to the holy Buddhist holiday.
However, a second concert scheduled for May was canceled after offended local Buddhists filed complaints with the police.
In South Korea, he has the support of fans and the president of the country’s largest Buddhist sect, the Jogye Order, who encourages him to proceed his activities, seeing DJing as a method to attract recent, younger followers.
