A survey shows that a majority of Thais support the prime minister’s plan to limit cannabis

About 76 percent of people that took part within the survey said they “completely agree” or “somewhat agree” with Srettha’s policy of re-criminalizing the plant, in accordance with a survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration.

The survey was conducted by telephone from Tuesday to Wednesday amongst 1,310 Thai residents aged 18 and over. Some 23.4 percent disagreed with the move, while 0.9 percent declined to reply or said they weren’t concerned concerning the issue.

The proposed policy reversal is one other blow to Thailandthe nascent post-decriminalization cannabis industry has been presented as a option to increase agricultural revenues and the country’s wellness tourism industry. Srettha announced the restriction of using marijuana for medical purposes.

The poll found that about 75 percent of respondents supported limited use of cannabis for medical reasons, and 19 percent said the federal government shouldn’t implement any policies supporting using the plant.

Cannabis advocacy groups last week they gathered to protest against Sretta’s order, asking the federal government to reconsider its plan to guard the interests of the growing industry and enormous farming community.

Nearly 8,000 dispensaries and numerous consumer agribusinesses have sprung up across Thailand, selling every thing from cannabis buds to grease extracts and sweets infused with the plant’s energetic chemicals.
