Blind people cannot “watch” movies, right? In this cinema in Indonesia they will

“I feel like I even have regained my sight. I could enjoy again what I enjoyed before I lost my sight,” said Irma Himayanti.

Irma had an accident as a toddler, was diagnosed with glaucoma and eventually lost her sight. Currently he teaches English on the School for the Blind.

Today, Irma regained all of the fun of watching movies when she got here across Bioskop Bisik.

Bioskop Bisik, which implies “whispering cinema” in Bahasa Indonesia, allows everyone to enjoy movies, even in the event that they have vision problems, by working with volunteers who describe what is going on within the film.

Bioskop Bisik was founded by Ramya Prajna, who desired to create an area for people to interact with individuals who could also be different from them through an easy experience, akin to watching a movie together.

“We want people to know that there are blind people around us. So the main goal is to enable the experience of how our eyes are not only for us but for others,” Ramya said at Our Better World, a storytelling initiative organized by Singapore International Foundation.

Being in a position to watch the videos is a “change” for Cheta, a contestant who has change into friends together with her whisperer, Kenny. “She… describes scenes very clearly, sometimes we exit of context and begin giggling (in the course of the film),” she said.

“We’re just having fun,” Kenny said. “I’m glad I found a new friend to enjoy the movie with.”

It was these conversations that Ramya hoped to spark by organizing the shows. Whispering cinema was intended to interrupt down barriers on either side – in order that volunteers would higher understand the needs of the blind, and the blind could address life with greater confidence, knowing that there are individuals who really care.

“The most important thing is that they have hope, support and people who care for them. This is something amazing for me and I want to be a part of it,” said Osse Kiki, one among the volunteers.
