Indonesia will propose recognizing three national parks as latest biosphere reserves on its thirtieth anniversaryvol Man and the Biosphere International Coordinating Council (MAB-ICC), which can meet from July 23 to twenty-eight in Palembang, South Sumatra.
“We are nominating Berbak Sembilanga in South Sumatra and Jambi, Betung Kerihun Danau Sentarum in West Kalimantan and Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara,” Enny Sudarmonowati, head of the MAB-UNESCO national committee, said on Monday in Jakarta, as quoted by tempo.co.
MAB-ICC is UNESCO’s annual program to debate the event of biosphere reserves for the restoration of ecosystems.
According to the official UNESCO website, “Biosphere reserves are areas that include terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystems. Each reserve promotes solutions that combine the protection of biodiversity with its sustainable use.”

Palembang might be the fifth host of the event outside France, after Jeju in South Korea, Dresden in Germany, Jonkoping in Sweden and Lima in Peru.
According to Enny, there are currently 669 biosphere reserves in 120 countries, 11 of that are in Indonesia.

She added that MAB-ICC gave Indonesia the chance to prove its role as one in all the countries with probably the most diverse biological resources on this planet.
“As host, Indonesia must propose recommendations for one of its biosphere reserves, Berbak Sembilang,” said Enny, who can also be deputy for biological sciences on the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
