AirAsia has unveiled its Rapid Airport Check-In System (FACES), becoming the primary airline in Malaysia to launch a facial recognition system on the airport.
The system is provided with a self-boarding gate at Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru.
The low-cost airline said on February 6 that it’s the first airline in Asia to offer a seamless journey from check-in to boarding with the most recent biometric facial recognition technology.
This eliminates the necessity to indicate a boarding pass and ID on the departure gate and allows passengers to board the plane more quickly.
With the automated boarding gate, all the boarding process for roughly 180 passengers will take 9 to 11 minutes as a substitute of 11 to 13 minutes in the present process. It is barely faster and makes an enormous difference for an airline like AirAsia, which has a turnaround time of just 25 minutes.
The automated gate system uses the Gunnebo solution, and the effectiveness of the facial recognition system is estimated at 80%.
At this time, FACES will only work with adults aged 18 and over. All other passengers, including those traveling with infants or those requiring additional assistance, will probably be required to finish the usual security screening and boarding process.
Unfortunately, younger passengers under 18 years of age should not allowed as their facial expression should not fully developed, which could affect the reliability of the flight.

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia and Group CEO of AirAsia X, said: “Airports are often the worst a part of flying. FACES is our latest effort to make on-ground experiences more seamless and fewer stressful by utilizing cutting-edge biometric technology to authenticate guests.

“With FACES, your face is your passport, making passing through the gate and boarding the plane a breeze. I need to thank Senai International Airport for once more supporting our efforts to enhance the travel experience for our guests through digital innovation, because it did after we became the primary airport in Malaysia to implement self-service baggage check-in.
“We hope that the success of FACES will be an inspiration and we are keen to work with other airports in Malaysia to revolutionize the way people travel with this technology and make flying enjoyable again.”
AirAsia intends to implement this feature in all airports in Malaysia and it’s now possible with Senai because of their cooperation and quick implementation. The service is accessible on each domestic and international AirAsia flights from Johor Bahru.
