China Railway, China’s state-owned railway company, will expand Cambodia’s railway system as a part of the trans-ASEAN railway, a railway linking China with its ASEAN neighbors.
Yang Zhongmin, president of China Railway, said yesterday that feasibility studies for a piece of the railway through Cambodia have been accomplished.
“China Railway’s subsidiary cooperated with Cambodia to finish a feasibility study for the 280 kilometers through Cambodia,” he said.
Yang said the corporate also worked with the Cambodian government to revise the national rail network plan, and that project has already been accomplished.
The TransASEAN railway is a priority for the Chinese government, Yang said, as it is going to improve connections with neighboring countries, especially the Lancang-Mekong cooperation countries of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

“The Trans-ASEAN Railway plays a key role in the development plans of the ASEAN region,” he said. “This railway starts in the south of China and ends in Singapore, connecting countries in the ASEAN region.”
Cambodia has two railway lines. One connects Phnom Penh with the coastal area and the opposite connects the capital with Banteay Meanchey province, on the border with Thailand, which is currently under renovation.
