According to the scientific journal Nature Research, Yeo Bee Yin is an environmentally vital person.
The Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and the Environment was included in “10 Nature”, a listing of 10 individuals who were vital this yr.
Calling Yeo a “force for the environment,” Nature celebrated Yeo as a powerful voice against plastic pollution.
“Since taking office on July 2, Yeo has taken several bold steps towards reforming the way Malaysia manages the environment and scientific research,” it said.
Yeo’s efforts to reform the electricity market and her fight against plastic pollution were highlighted, coinciding with growing global concerns about single-use plastics.
“On October 31, Yeo launched a 12-year action plan and regulatory framework to eliminate single-use plastics in Malaysia by 2030, which also calls for research and commercialization of environmentally friendly alternatives such as biodegradable plastics,” it said.

Reefcheck Malaysia CEO Julian Hyde told Nature that Yeo’s efforts and motion plan exceeded realistic timescales.
“Yeo stated that by funding local research and adopting foreign techniques, Malaysia can develop biodegradable plastic technology,” it said.
The magazine included a quote from Yeo: “Some people search for solutions to problems, not solutions to problems… When normal functioning isn’t possible, you discover one other solution.”
