Singapore rejects opposition claims linking Covid vaccines to excess deaths

SingaporeThe Ministry of Health rejected calls from the opposition party for the suspension Covid-19 vaccinationclaiming that the incidence of great uncomfortable side effects is high.

Last Wednesday, the People’s Power Party attempted to attract links between high vaccination rates and excess deaths in a Facebook post, citing “research and analyzes conducted by eminent health workers,” the ministry said in a media statement on Monday.

The party claimed that Singapore has seen an “extraordinary and exceptionally high increase in deaths” since 2021, when the Covid-19 vaccination was introduced, in comparison with the years before vaccination.

“What is more worrying is that such a high number of deaths is not specific to Singapore as other countries and regions highly vaccinated against Covid-19 are also facing similar problems,” the opposition party said in its Facebook post.

The health ministry said it categorically rejected the blatant and false claims, adding that folks must “draw the correct conclusions and be guided by scientific evidence regarding the protection and effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.”

“The most important reason Singapore has recorded considered one of the world’s lowest rates of excess mortality in the course of the pandemic is that nearly all of Singaporeans have taken up the vaccines,” it said.

The health ministry said that despite claims that vaccinations result in excess deaths, quite a few studies have shown that vaccination against Covid-19 reduces the chance in comparison with unvaccinated populations.

This includes countries that primarily use mRNA vaccines, she added.

“In fact, 19.8 million Covid-19 deaths were prevented globally in the first 12 months after vaccines became available [December 2020-21]– the ministry said.

The excess deaths in Singapore during the pandemic can be attributed to the deaths of people infected with Covid-19 or people who have recently had the infection, he said. Among the dead, there was an “overrepresentation” of people who had not been fully vaccinated.

The high level of vaccine protection has prevented many Covid-19-related deaths, kept the healthcare system from being overwhelmed and protected lives and livelihoods, the ministry said, adding: “Normality in our daily lives is largely due to the protection provided by Covid-19 vaccines ensure.”
