Wildlife photographer Ian Wood has been photographing great apes within the wild for a long time, but when a young orangutan discovered his hidden camera on a recent trip to Borneo, he got some truly unexpected results. On a recent annual trip to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, Ian obtained unexpected results up close.
He decided to cover a GoPro camera near places where orangutans frequent, hoping to take wide-angle, close-up photos of them within the forest. He figured that in a worst-case scenario, if the orangutan found his camera, it will understand it wasn’t food and throw it away.
Well, he wishes.
The three-year-old orangutan picked it up and showed great interest. Then something unexpected happened.

After the LCD screen cracked, the orangutan by chance took a whole lot of photos by pressing the major button. Ian watched through his iPhone, which was connected to the camera, organising the Wi-Fi connection. After about half-hour, the orangutan escaped with him right into a tree. He finally ditched the GoPro.

On this journey, lead in partnership with Orangutan Foundation UKI used to be driving A group of seven people to photograph wildlife and help raise money for conservation in the world.
