Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday that his ruling party will likely be the dominant force in politics for as much as a century, telling the opposition it should wait until the subsequent life if it desires to take power.
Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), in power since 1979, holds all of the seats within the 125-seat legislature after dissolving the most important opposition ahead of the 2018 general election and being accused of plotting to overthrow the federal government.
“Who can replace Hun Sen now? Let’s be honest and are available out,” he said. “There is not any one,” he said after inspecting the development of the brand new provincial airport.
In 2017, the Cambodia National Salvation Party (CNRP) was disbanded and 118 members were suspended for five years as a part of a widespread crackdown on the opposition, civil society and the media ahead of the 2018 elections.
Hun Sen said on Monday that the CPP’s newly built $30 million headquarters in Phnom Penh and its provincial office show that the party will lead national politics for a very long time.
“They won’t be valid for 2 to 3 years, but for the subsequent 50, 100 years, we’ve got to do not forget that,” Hun Sen added.
