Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band, formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They then dropped out of school to pay attention more on the band that eventually became Dream Theater. Although there have been several lineup changes, the three original members remained together together with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until September 8, 2010, when Portnoy left the band. In October 2010, the band held auditions to seek out a drummer to interchange Portnoy. Mike Mangini was announced as the brand new everlasting drummer on April 29, 2011.

The band is well-known for the technical prowess of its instrumentalists, who’ve won quite a few awards from music magazines. Guitarist John Petrucci was named as a 3rd player on the G3 tour six times, greater than any of the invited players. In 2009, he was named the second best metal guitarist by Joel McIver in his book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists. He was also named one among the “10 Fastest Shredders of All Time” by GuitarOne Magazine (Wikipedia).
