Little is understood concerning the bay cat; one in all five species of untamed cats found on the island of Borneo. Scientists have had difficulty gathering basic information concerning the animal’s biology, behavior and distribution on account of its mysterious nature.
But now we’re one step closer to understanding this mysterious species. Amazing camera trap footage of a nesting cat was captured in a forest where people thought the cat didn’t exist.
In cooperation with scientists from Muhammadiyah University Palangka Raya (Indonesia) and the University of Exeter (Great Britain), Borneo Nature Foundation conducted wildlife surveys within the Rungan Forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. As a part of the research, 52 camera traps were arrange, because of which it was possible to search out out what species live within the forest.
Despite reports that the cat is bay (Badia Catopuma) was not present in the world, a video was taken of a male bay cat, which revealed that the species actually inhabits the forest. The location of the video was roughly 64 km southeast outside its known range.
The animal’s exact location has not been revealed since the Rungan forest is just not protected and the species is liable to being hunted throughout Borneo.
Cats are one of the vital difficult species to review within the wild. They are elusive, solitary and well camouflaged. However, our knowledge and understanding of Borneo’s mysterious wild cats is improving because of technology akin to camera traps. Camera traps give us insight into the lives of animals that humans rarely, if ever, see.
They are a very important conservation tool because they’ll reveal key information that would help protect endangered species akin to the bay cat.
There’s still quite a bit we do not learn about Borneo’s rainforests, and the clock is ticking. If we would like to save lots of species on the point of extinction, more research is required to grasp the distribution and ecological needs of the island’s wildlife.
