On Tuesday, a representative from the Malaysian prime minister’s office confirmed his comments. Anwar didn’t provide further details in regards to the Brics application process.
In the interview, Anwar said Malaysia is committed to the Global South and its potential membership in Brics will probably be of strategic importance given the Strait of Malacca’s position as a crucial shipping lane connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
He said he was relieved that the world was now not unipolar and that Brics provided a glimmer of hope that there have been checks and balances on the planet.
“We can now not accept a scenario by which the West wants to regulate the discourse, because the actual fact is that it isn’t any longer a colonial power and independent countries needs to be free to precise themselves,” he added.
Malaysia and China are expected to sign several agreements during Li’s visit, including the renewal of a five-year trade and economic cooperation agreement.
