An elephant named Chamchuree gave birth to a pair of female and male twins on the Royal Elephant Kraal Village in Thailand. The birth of dual different-sex elephants is believed to be the primary of its kind on this planet.
Chamchuree, 36, gave birth to the child on the night of June 7 at Royal Elephant Kraal Village in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District. The birth of elephants is a rare event and has been welcomed by animal lovers and the area people.
Chamchuree first gave birth to an 80-kilogram male calf, and 18 minutes later she gave birth to a 60-kilogram female calf.
The birth surprised and delighted elephant breeders. This twin delivery is Chamchuree’s fourth pregnancy and marks his 94th and ninety fifth delivery on the kraal in his 27 years of operation. The twins’ father is a 29-year-old elephant named Siam.
Laithongrian Meephan, president of the Phra Kochaban foundation that cares for elephants, said he had seen twins born before, but they were all the time of the identical sex. According to him, the birth of twins of various sexes stands out as the first on this planet.
Earlier, in November 2023, the birth of dual elephants in Kenya also caught the world’s attention, although each calves were female. According to ABC News, twin elephant births are rare and only account for about 1% of all elephant births.
During Chamchuree’s birth, a mahout (elephant keeper) assisting in the method was injured within the ankle while trying to stop the mother elephant from attacking her calves. Kornak was immediately taken to hospital for tests and X-rays.
According to AFP, the dual calves are currently with their mother. A special platform helps them reach their mother for feeding, and in addition they receive additional milk through a syringe.
Moreover, in line with Thai customs, the twins might be named inside the subsequent seven days.
