Ride to recollect Bangkok-based bicycle company SpiceRoads is organizing the four-day Anzac Ride to Remembrance tour to attach it with annual events commemorating fallen Allied soldiers held at Hellfire Pass and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand. The cyclists might be in Kanchanaburi, where the 118-kilometer route begins.
Kanchanaburi might be Thailand’s most famous World War II site, well-known for the Bridge over the River Kwai and the infamous Thai-Burma Railway, also generally known as the Death Railway. Prisoners of war were forced to work hard to construct the railway in extremely difficult conditions and to commemorate those that died, a national day of remembrance is established at Hellfire Pass yearly on April 25 as a part of ANZAC Day.
There is a dawn parade at Hellfire Pass, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony within the town of Kanchanaburi on the Don Rak War Cemetery, where 6,982 Allied POWs who died throughout the construction of the railway are buried.
On this bike tour we’ll visit famous World War II sites, participate in ceremonies, and while riding amazing trails through the jungle, teak plantations and villages, we’ll see some off-the-beaten-path places. We sail down the river on bamboo rafts, visit Lawa Cave to see stalactites and stalagmites in lots of unique formations, and stay overnight at resorts on the banks of the famous River Kwai.
The full-board tour costs USD 750 per person and includes bicycle rental.
