In a major shift in tourism trends, China has once more turn into the leading source of tourists to Vietnam. In May 2024, a whopping 357,907 Chinese tourists arrived in Vietnam, accounting for nearly 40% of all foreign arrivals and marking a major milestone since China reopened its borders in March 2022.
This increase in Chinese tourism is reclaiming the highest spot previously held by South Korea within the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. May data ranks South Korea because the second-largest source market with 351,000 visitors, followed by Taiwan, Japan and the United States. The top 10 source markets also included Cambodia, India, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia, in accordance with the General Statistics Office.
Vietnam welcomed a complete of 1.38 million international visitors in May, up 51% from the identical period last 12 months, signaling a solid recovery within the tourism sector. However, it’s price noting a slight decline of 10% from the previous month in April.
The resurgence of Chinese tourism has encouraged Southeast Asian countries to tap into the world’s largest outbound market. Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore have introduced visa-free entry policies for Chinese tourists, recognizing the massive potential for economic growth from tourism.
