Palembang LRT on target for 2018 Asian Games

Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said a key light rail project in Palembang will receive financial support to make sure its completion before the 2018 Asian Games.

The US$751.9 billion 2018 Asian Games project allocated US$15.04 billion for the event of the Palembang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project.

“The railway shall be accomplished by December. All that is still is to take care of the train in 2018. The LRT shall be operational by June 2018 or no less than two months before the 2018 Asian Games,” Sumadi said.

Palembang Light Rail Transit (Palembang LRT) is a lightweight rail system currently under construction in Palembang, Indonesia, connecting the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport with the Jakabaring Stadium Complex. The project is meant to facilitate the hosting of the 2018 Asian Games.

One of the sections of town railway crosses the Musi River, so its construction is time-consuming and requires the development of a 475-meter-long bridge.

The government can also be working to make sure the LRT network has enough electricity to operate without disruption.

“We have already asked PLN (the state electricity supplier) to provide electricity supplies in an amount sufficient to run the train,” the minister said.

So far, LRT has reached 40 percent completion. Now the local government is determining probably the most appropriate fare for users.
