The best countries to live and work – and increase your salary

Moving abroad increases the common employee’s income by $21,000, with the best paid staff in Switzerland, the US and Hong Kong.

That’s based on a study that found 45 percent of expats said their current jobs paid higher abroad, while 28 percent moved due to a promotion. In Switzerland, known for each its mountains and its prices, the annual increase in income totaled $61,000. The average salary of expats there was $203,000 a yr—twice the worldwide average.

In HSBC’s annual Expat Explorer, Singapore topped the list of the most effective places to live and work for the fourth yr running, beating New Zealand, Germany and Canada. Switzerland got here in eighth, held back by the high cost of raising children and the issue of creating friends.

“Singapore offers everything a budding expat could want in one of the world’s smallest territories,” said John Goddard, head of HSBC Expat.

Sweden, some of the gender-equal countries on this planet, received top scores within the families category, while New Zealand, Spain and Taiwan got here out on top within the experiences category.

Despite the cultural, financial and skilled advantages of moving abroad, the study of twenty-two,318 people found that ladies fared worse on quite a lot of measures.

While moving boosted women’s earnings by about 27 percent—outpacing the rise that men saw—only a couple of quarter moved to advance their careers, compared with 47 percent of their male counterparts. Only half worked full time, and overall educational attainment was barely lower. Women’s median annual salary was also $42,000 lower than men’s.
