The fifth edition of the Sustainable Light Art Festival and Light Marina Bay officially opened on Friday evening (March 3). Artists from nine countries – including Singapore – are presenting art installations based on the theme of “Light and Nature” at this 12 months’s festival.
“These installations, created using environmentally friendly and energy-efficient lighting, highlight the importance of sustainability and reinforce Marina Bay’s position as a sustainable district,” reads a press release from the corporate and Light Marina Bay.
A light-weight installation called the Ocean Pavilion marked the official opening of the festival. Designed by British artist Luke Jerram, it stands as much as 8.5m tall. Made from greater than 25,000 plastic water bottles and illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting, the domed structures were built by greater than 300 community members over three weeks, in keeping with i Light Marina Bay.

In addition to the lighting installations, festival organizers said 79 constructing owners and organizations around Marina Bay have pledged to support the “Switch Off, Turn Up” campaign by turning off unnecessary lighting and turning up the air con throughout the festival. The energy saved will offset the energy use of the installations on the festival, in keeping with festival organizer Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

In addition to the sunshine structures, the festival may also host a recycling and upcycling market, an urban garden, an academic playground and a kinetic energy playground, happening from March 3-5 and March 9-12 at The Promontory.
