Singapore’s ‘Fire Rainbow’ Cloud Phenomenon Lights Up Sky

A rare cloud phenomenon over Singapore has delighted residents of the city-state. The multi-coloured glow appeared within the sky late Monday afternoon, lasted about quarter-hour and was visible across the island.

Media reports said it was likely a hearth rainbow, which is created when sunlight refracts through clouds of ice crystals. Others also said it might have been cloud iridescence, which occurs when water droplets or crystals scatter light.

Fazidah Mokhtar, who works at a nursery, told the BBC she noticed it at about 5:10pm on Monday (09:10 GMT). “It began as a small orange circle after which it got greater and larger until all the colors were there… It lasted for about quarter-hour after which slowly disappeared.

She said that “all the children in the school, some parents and other staff were very excited and commented that it was very, very rare to see such a beautiful and unique rainbow.”

The phenomenon has grow to be the topic of jokes online, with many comparing it to “paddle pop,” a rainbow-colored frozen dessert popular in Australia and Asia.

“The rainbow bridge is down,” one Facebook user joked, while one other asked: “Is this a case of Monday rainbow?!”
