On Indonesian islands, famous amongst domestic and foreign tourists for his or her natural beauty, tons of of “women miracle workers” have empowered women to develop into clean energy micro-entrepreneurs by developing life-changing solar lighting, clean cookstoves and water filters.
There is an important need for reasonably priced, clean energy technologies worldwide, especially within the poorest provinces of eastern Indonesia, but geography and demographics make access to energy an enormous challenge.
That’s where Kopernika’s Wonder Women Eastern Indonesia initiative is available in. Equipping women with the abilities and resources to develop into micro-social entrepreneurs in clean energy is a feasible, sustainable approach to connect these technologies to the individuals who need them most.
For example, Rovina Surat, a single mother of two who has been living in her brother’s lounge since her then-husband left for Malaysia in 2012, is now an inspiring woman in her village.
After joining the Wonder Women programme at Copernicus University in 2014, she developed a straightforward technology: the d.light S300, a conveyable solar lamp powered by solar energy that brightens up the night.
At every opportunity, she spoke enthusiastically about this easy technology that allowed children to review at night and fishermen like herself to hunt squid before dawn.
One of the villagers in her community said: Our higher world, Singapore International Foundation’s storytelling initiative, “I’m so proud to see Rovina now. Because of her, your complete village now not has to live in total darkness”
It creates access to wash energy technologies for last mile communities, allowing people to lower your expenses and time spent on collecting firewood, buying expensive kerosene, boiling water or buying expensive drinking water. It allows them to enjoy higher health and safety.
“I used to keep all my money in a soap tin and bury it in the ground. Now I’m starting to open my own bank account so I can save more and fulfill this dream,” Rovina told Our Better World.
In addition, the wonderful women like Rovina and Ibu Bekti within the video are trained in financial management, sales and marketing, public speaking, technology usage and support, and mentoring to motivate them to grow their businesses.
They also receive clean energy technologies on commission, in order that they can start their very own business without going into debt and earn something on each sale. For Rovina, this implies opening her own small kiosk selling on a regular basis goods.
