Construction of the longest bridge within the Philippines to start soon?

The Philippine Public Works and Highways Service (DPWH) has proposed a brand new project that can connect the island of Mindoro to the province of Batangas via a world-class superbridge called the “Batangas-Mindoro Bridge.”

Mindoro Island’s current position is ideally placed because the “Luzon Gateway to the South” to the Visayas and Mindanao island provinces, opening roads along the maritime highway for faster and more efficient transportation of products and other people. It may help develop agriculture and eco-tourism, and supply a superb opportunity for the expansion and optimization of basic industries or utilities corresponding to water, power, oil, and telecommunications.

Project description:

  • The proposed project involves the development of a Super Bridge that can connect Mindoro Island to the province of Batangas. The bridge is 15 km long and can cover a distance of 8.5 km from Mindoro Island to Verde Island and 6.5 km from Verde Island to Batangas, in water depths of 10-300 m.
  • Number of lanes: 2 or 4
  • Pedestrian/Bicycle Lane: Optional
  • Ship Passage: Gate/High Bridge

Project goals:

  • Maximize Mindoro Island’s current position because the “Luzon Gateway to the South” for the island provinces of Visayas and Mindanao by opening routes that can allow for faster and more efficient transportation of products and other people along the present maritime highway.
  • To meet the growing demand for expansion and optimization of basic industries and municipal services corresponding to water, energy, oil and telecommunications firms.
  • Supporting agriculture and ecotourism.

In reference to the implementation of the PPP project for the development, operation and maintenance of the Mindoro-Batangas Sea Bridge connecting Mindoro Island with Batangas City, Congressman Reynaldo V. Umali proposed House Bill No. 2767 on August 9, 2017.

“San Miguel Corporation has proposed the construction of the said super bridge with a total length of 15 kilometers and it will cover a 6.5-kilometer section from Barangay Ilijan in Batangas City to Verde Island and an 8.5-kilometer section from Verde Island to Barangay Sinandigan in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, in water depths ranging from 10 meters to 300 meters,” said Oriental Mindoro Governor Alfonso Umali Jr.
