According to research conducted by language learning platform Preply, there are 21 highly desirable expat destinations in Asia. Using 9 essential relocation metrics, the study considers aspects akin to the common monthly cost of living for expats, average salaries, safety scores, and more.
In this rating, Singapore takes the highest spot as one of the best city in Asia and the world for expats in 2024. With high standards of cleanliness and safety, and a wealth of cultural treasures to explore, the town is a perfect alternative for expats.
Bangkok, Thailand, is available in second on the list. An incredible 19% of tourists return to the town, confirming its popularity. With 347 attractions to take pleasure in, from tempting street food to magnificent temples, Bangkok also stands out as top-of-the-line cities in Asia for expats, offering reasonably priced living costs ($1,043 monthly) and fast web (92 Mbps).
In third place are Dubai and Penang in Malaysia. Penang offers a median monthly cost of living of around $691, while Dubai is understood for its luxurious lifestyle, despite a high cost of living of $3,787 monthly. However, a tempting profit for expats in Dubai is the tax laws that exempt those earning over £50,000, which increases the town’s appeal.
Next on the list is Chiang Mai, which is available in fourth place with a monthly cost of living of around $665. Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia is available in fifth with a monthly cost of living of around $1,064.

With 1.23 million expats and migrant staff in Singapore by 2022, Preply also researched probably the most reasonably priced and expensive areas to rent a one-bedroom apartment. Ang Mo Kio stands out as one of the best value for money, taking over only 23% of household income ($5,499 income, $1,268 rent monthly). Sembawang is available in second with the next monthly income ($8,499) and almost twice the rent of Ang Mo Kio ($2,329), accounting for about 27% of expenses. Yishun is available in third (28%), followed by Punggol in fourth (29%) and Choa Chu Kang in fifth (30%), rounding out the list with the best percentage of expenses on rent.
Meanwhile, Toa Payoh tops the list of the costliest rental areas in Singapore, with 91% of residents’ income going towards rent, a median income of around $5,499 and rental costs of around $5,007. Bukit Merah is in second place, with 86% of income going towards rent and rents of around $4,712 monthly. Third on the list is Outram (77%), followed by Kallang (75%) and Geylang (66%).
