The Southeast Asian port scene is incredibly dynamic, especially in the case of terminal operations, and few ports within the region can boast of a spot in the worldwide rankings for performance.

Below is an inventory of the biggest ports in Southeast Asia when it comes to container throughput, based on 2016 statistics and aggregated data for the worldwide rating. This list relies on the full variety of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) actually handled through the port.

PORT SINGAPORE – STRAITS OF MALACA

The Port of Singapore maintained its performance in 2016 despite a weaker-than-expected global economic situation and significant structural changes within the maritime industry, The Straits Times reported.

Singapore remained the world’s largest bunker port in 2016, with total bunker volumes traded on the Port of Singapore increasing by 7.7 per cent to 48.6 million tonnes, up from 45.2 million tonnes in 2015.

According to The Edge Markets, in January 2017, the Port Klang Authority (PKA) announced that in 2016, Port Klang recorded a growth of 10.8%, reaching 13.17 million TEU of container transshipment, in comparison with 2015.

“The positive growth of Port Klang is attributed to several factors, mainly efficient and productive terminal operators, strong support from the Port Klang transport and logistics community and supply-based port facilities, and state-of-the-art cargo handling equipment,” PKA said.

“In addition, close cooperation and coordination between the Port Authority and terminal operators in solving operational problems has increased the level of confidence of port users,” it added.

PORT TANJUNG PELEPAS, Malaysia – Straits of Malacca

Malaysian every day The Star reported that Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP) has turn out to be the primary Malaysian port to handle greater than 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during a single ship stopover.

PTP Chairman Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said the achievement was made possible by effective planning of container operations.

Laem Chabang Port is the third largest port in Thailand and was created to tackle among the growing trade traffic that was overwhelming the port in Bangkok. It can also be the essential cruise port in Bangkok.

According to the Bangkok Post, about 7.68 million twenty-foot-equivalent containers (TEUs) go through the Laem Chabang port annually.

The Port of Saigon is Vietnam’s most vital economic center, accounting for one-fifth of gross domestic product and almost one-third of business output. The Port of Saigon’s industries are very diverse and include mining, seafood processing, agriculture and construction, trade, industry, finance, and tourism.

Recently, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmChams) on its official website announced that a three way partnership between Saigon Port and PSA Vietnam Pte Ltd, a completely owned subsidiary of PSA International Pte Ltd (PSAI), has been granted an investment license to develop a brand new container port project in Vung Tau Province, Vietnam. It will serve the rapidly growing container traffic in Vietnam and turn out to be a significant hub for Indochina.
