Microsoft is getting closer to achieving its goal of using 100% renewable energy sources by agreeing to buy solar energy from panels installed on public and government buildings in Singapore.
With this agreement, Microsoft strengthens its commitment to sustainability, despite the emissions challenges that AI investments bring.
Singapore’s Largest Solar Project
EDP Renewables’ SolarNova 8 project will install solar panels on 1,075 residential buildings and 101 government buildings, with a capability of as much as 200 megawatts peak (MWp). Microsoft will purchase all solar energy exported to Singapore’s grid from the project.
The entire SolarNova programme is anticipated to generate 420 gigawatt-hours per 12 months, which can cover about 5% of Singapore’s energy consumption, with SolarNova 8 being the biggest phase of the programme.
EDPR secured Phase 8 of the SolarNova programme in February, making it the biggest solar project in Singapore and the biggest government initiative under the programme.

Long-term contract
On August 27, EDPR and Microsoft strengthened their partnership by signing a 20-year agreement. The partnership began in 2018, when Microsoft first purchased 100% of the ability from a 60MWp solar project owned by Sunseap Group (now EDP Renewables APAC).

Ambitious goals
The SolarNova programme, launched in 2014 by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Housing Development Board (HDB), goals to speed up the deployment of solar PV systems in Singapore. Through the programme, HDB coordinates public sector demand for the installation of solar panels on HDB blocks and government properties.
Microsoft, which has set ambitious goals to change into a carbon-negative company by 2030, is now ramping up its efforts. After a 30% increase in emissions last 12 months as a consequence of its AI investments, the tech company is taking more concrete steps toward achieving its climate goals. This agreement is a tangible demonstration of Microsoft’s commitment to investing in clean and sustainable energy solutions.
