Global e-commerce giant Amazon is ready to launch its services in Singapore, marking its entry into the Southeast Asian market.
According to a preferred technology website Tech Crunchthe premiere could occur as early as this week, judging by teasers posted on social media by the island’s influencer community.
The influencers included, amongst others: Jaime Teo, girl-teramen, Charmaine Seah-Ongand a way of life portal superadrianme.com with the hashtag #dontsaybojio.
While there isn’t any official Amazon logo visible within the trailers, eagle-eyed users have spotted the distinctive blue checkmark that denotes the Amazon Prime Now service.
According to the portal, with the launch, services reminiscent of Amazon Prime, Amazon Prime Now fast delivery and Amazon e-commerce services will probably be made available to Singapore’s greater than five million population.
Pricing details are unavailable right now.
Amazon’s move comes at an opportune time, as Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has been expanding rapidly in Southeast Asia over the past 12 months, fueled by major investments in Malaysia, reminiscent of the Digital Free Trade Zone, its first e-mall outside of China, and the launch of its Alipay digital wallet and Alibaba Cloud service.
However, the announcement comes after founder Jack Ma’s Alibaba Group Holding Limited focused on Malaysia as a substitute of Singapore.
According to TechWire AsiaMalaysia is seen as a “developing transport hub alongside Singapore” and is a “good logistical alternative”.
While each countries boast among the world’s busiest container ports, with access to a main location along the Straits of Malacca, a significant shipping lane connecting the West with the East, Malaysia has the upper hand.
