Lion Group is preparing to expand into Indonesia’s international market, opening several latest routes to Australia, India and East Asia. Lion is the domestic leader in Indonesia, with its three Indonesian subsidiaries accounting for about half of the country’s total capability. However, the group has only a small presence within the Indonesian international market, with only five scheduled international destinations.
Full service subsidiary Batik Air has experienced delays in launching operations in Australia and India, but stays keen to serve each markets with multiple destinations. Meanwhile, its Malaysian subsidiary Malindo Air is launching the group’s entry into Indonesia and Australia with a brand new fifth freedom route from Bali to Brisbane, which is able to launch on 31 March 2017.
International expansion is becoming a strategic necessity for Lion, as Indonesia’s international market is now growing faster than its much larger domestic market. AirAsia and Garuda are already focusing more on international expansion, increasing their lead over Lion in Indonesia’s international market.
