Indonesia AirAsia X to debut in East Asia soon

Indonesia AirAsia X, the local arm of Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia X based in Denpasar, Bali, has announced that it is ready to enter the East Asian market with flights to Tokyo Narita in Japan, set to start late within the second quarter of this 12 months.

According to a press release, 4 weekly flights from Denpasar to Tokyo will begin on May 24, operated by the wide-body A330-300 aircraft.

The announcement comes after the Kuala Lumpur International-based AirAsia unit received regulatory approval earlier this month from the Indonesian Transport Ministry and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

“We would love to thank each the Japanese and Indonesian ministries and all other relevant authorities for his or her support. The launch of this direct flight will contribute to the event of the economies of each countries,” AirAsia Indonesia CEO Dendy Kurniawan said in a press release on Tuesday (21/03).

The route will likely be operated by A330-300 aircraft, which may accommodate 377 people, including 12 award-winning Premium Flatbed cabins designed for low-cost carriers.

“Japan is currently the third largest foreign tourist destination in Bali. We have seen a steady increase in the number of tourists year after year,” said Sulistyo Hanung Nugroho, president and CEO of Indonesia AirAsia X.

In 2016, the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that at the very least 235,009 tourists from Japan arrived in Bali, a rise of three.06 percent in comparison with 2015.

Indonesia AirAsia X currently operates five A320-200s and two A330-300s on routes across Indonesia, in addition to to Penang, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Johor Bahru in Malaysia.
