Investing in start-ups to enhance telecommunications services

Telecom operator Indosat Ooredoo continues to work with company founders Mountain Partners and Kejora, investing around $150,000 in three startups in Indonesia in hopes of improving services.

Prashant Gokarn, chief digital services officer at Indosat Ooredoo, said on Monday that the three startups – Andalin, Ayo Slide and Sevva – were chosen after a rigorous selection process from amongst 1,200 startups that had applied under the Ideabox program.

“Many of these services are attractive to specific customers and parts of the Indosat market,” Gokarn said, adding that he expects the three chosen startups to supply various kinds of feedback and help expand the corporate’s customer base.

Andalin is a comprehensive online service helping in export-import processes for specialised small and medium-sized enterprises. Ayo Slide is a marketing platform that uses cell phone screen locks. Savva is a rental service platform that makes it easy to rent baby equipment, photography and fashion.

“This year we are focusing on improving customer experience in terms of network, service quality and content. Last year we launched spotify, iflix and many other services, this year we will do it [also] expand them,” Gokarn said.

Indosat Ooredoo currently invests in almost 20 firms, including the Ideabox enterprise program, which has been running since 2013. Last yr, the corporate recorded 11.8 percent revenue growth from Rp 21,895.7 billion in 2015.
