Indonesia declares intention to hitch BRICS: a brand new step in global diplomacy
At the BRICS Plus Summit held in Kazan, Russia (October 24), Indonesia officially announced its intention to hitch the BRICS economic alliance.
The decision marks the start of Indonesia’s path to becoming a part of a gaggle of emerging economies that features Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Indonesia’s commitment to global justice and peace
At the summit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Sugiono, represented the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, as a special envoy.
He delivered a powerful message from the President, emphasizing the importance of standing as much as colonialism and oppression, especially in light of the continued crises in Palestine and Lebanon.
According to the official website Indonesian Ministry of Foreign AffairsSugiono assured: “Indonesia won’t remain silent so long as these atrocities proceed without accountability.”
The Indonesian government called for a right away ceasefire and the enforcement of international law, while emphasizing the necessity for continued support within the reconstruction of Gaza.

Strengthening BRICS cooperation and supporting the Global South
During the summit, Indonesia also proposed several specific actions geared toward strengthening BRICS cooperation and supporting the event of nations within the Global South.
The first key point highlights the fitting to sustainable development of developing countries, which need more political space. Meanwhile, developed countries are expected to meet their commitments to support global growth.
Second, Indonesia has pushed for reforms to the multilateral system to make it more inclusive and representative of current global realities. To perform their tasks effectively, international institutions should be strengthened and equipped with appropriate resources.
Finally, Sugiono emphasized that BRICS can function a vital platform to support unity and solidarity amongst countries of the Global South. “BRICS can act as a binding force for developing countries to enhance cooperation in various sectors,” he said.

Indonesia’s foreign policy: free and lively
According to Sugiono, Indonesia’s aspirations to hitch BRICS are consistent with the country’s principle of an lively and independent foreign policy. “Indonesia’s membership in BRICS doesn’t mean an alliance with any particular bloc, but quite our lively participation in various international forums,” he stressed.
He also added that BRICS priorities are consistent with Indonesia’s national agenda under Merah Putiha, particularly within the areas of food and energy security, poverty reduction and human resource development.
“BRICS provides an appropriate platform to advocate the common interests of developing countries, without neglecting our cooperation with other global forums,” Sugiono added.

Sustainable international commitment
Indonesia continues to actively take part in various international forums. President Joko Widodo is scheduled to attend the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro next month, while Sugiono has been invited to attend an expanded G7 foreign ministers session in Fiuggi, Italy.
These engagements underscore Indonesia’s strategic role as a bridge builder between developing and developed countries.
On the sidelines of the BRICS Plus summit, Minister Sugiono held several bilateral meetings, including: with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Secretary General of the PLO and other strategic partners comparable to China, India, Thailand and Malaysia.
In addition, Sugiono held preliminary talks by telephone with the foreign ministers of Singapore and Cambodia.
