Shaping a Sustainable Tomorrow: Highlights from the 4th ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (AICEE)

The ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (AICEE) returns for its fourth 12 months and takes place in Vientiane, Laos PDR, on September 25, 2024. Led by the ASEAN Center for Energy (ACE) and the Ministry of Energy of Laos PDR, the event supports the Laos Chairmanship of ASEAN by the PDR in 2024 and goals to support the ASEAN energy agenda through cross-sectoral discussions.

The fourth AICEE meeting is held together with the twenty fourth ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF-24) and the forty second ASEAN Energy Ministers Meeting (AMEM). With the theme “Charting ASEAN’s Energy Future for Regional Interconnectivity and Resilience,” the conference demonstrates the collective commitment to strengthen ASEAN energy cooperation through the synergy of academia, practitioners and stakeholders to advance energy resilience and transformation.

AICEE has two principal goals: first, to function a platform for knowledge exchange amongst scientists, policymakers and businesses on energy and climate change in ASEAN; second, supporting interdisciplinary cooperation in ASEAN to speed up energy security and transformation.

This 12 months’s discussions at AICEE concentrate on the ASEAN Action Plan for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), Phase II: 2021-2025, which serves as a blueprint for the region’s energy transformation, emphasizing energy security and environmental sustainability.

Dr. Zulfikar Yurnaidi, Head of the Energy Modeling and Policy Planning Department at ACE and Chairman of the 4th edition of AICEE, emphasizes the importance of the conference in shaping the long run of ASEAN energy. He argues that the 4th AICEE facilitates cross-sectoral cooperation by supporting the implementation of APAEC Phase II and energy priorities under the leadership of the Lao PDR.

Following the submission of over 250 abstracts, the 4th edition of AICEE will cover key topics including:

  1. Energy transformation and recent technologies: Focusing on the transition to sustainable energy through recent technologies, including renewable energy and modern energy efficiency solutions.

  2. Security and accessibility: Emphasizing the supply of energy networks, cybersecurity and physical security of interconnected systems and promoting regional cooperation.

  3. Sustainability and climate: Highlighting the urgency of sustainability in responding to climate change through emissions reductions, renewable energy adoption and green infrastructure.

  4. Carbon pricing and green investments: Highlighting the importance of carbon pricing mechanisms and green investments in promoting low-carbon technologies.

  5. Energy and digitalization: Exploring the connection between energy and digital technologies, including IoT and blockchain, for efficient energy systems.

  6. Environment and socio-economic aspects: Analyzing multidimensional facets of the energy transition, including energy, environment, economics, politics and social sciences.

The success of the AICEE conference is attributed to the numerous contributions of educational partners and host institutions. The ASEAN and East Asia Economic Research Institute (ERIA) is providing key funding, with the National University of Laos (NUOL) because the principal host. Other academic partners corresponding to Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation (JASTIP), Chulalongkorn University Energy Research Institute, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), ASEAN Phase of the Climate Change and Energy Project II (ACCEPT II) and Udayana University offer useful support and insights.
