In an effort to spice up trade within the region, Thailand is integrating its national railway into the Laos-China network. The network is anticipated to enhance travel and trade connectivity while strengthening the regional logistics system with Thailand because the central hub.
Awirut Thongnate, deputy governor of Thailand Railways (SRT), said SRT is working with the Lao National Railway Authority to officially open the Thailand-Laos railway line next month, which can connect Thailand and China by rail for the primary time.
The Thai railway system begins at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station in Bangkok, passes through major cities equivalent to Udon Thani and Nong Khai within the northeast, and connects to the Lao rail network at Khamsavath Station in Vientiane. Following the successful test run on May 21, the Bangkok-Vientiane Railway will test run on July 13-14.
To ensure smooth operations, SRT has also provided training to Lao Railway staff in areas equivalent to train operation, station management and ticketing.
The Laos-China high-speed railway has already reduced the time it takes to move goods from Thailand to China. With the scheduled opening of the Bangkok-Vientiane railway line in July 2024, shipping times and customs procedures are expected to change into even shorter and more efficient.
This opens up significant opportunities for Thai exports, especially food, seasonal goods and perishable goods equivalent to durian, which generated greater than 2 billion baht ($54.4 million) this 12 months. Thai exports to China via this railway are expected to extend by 17%, reaching about 250 billion baht in 2024, and can proceed to grow in the long run.
This rail network represents a major step forward in trade between Thailand and China, making China a significant trading partner despite not sharing a land border.
