Unlike other regions in Southeast Asia which have a tropical climate, winter in Sa Pa, Vietnam lasts from December to February.
When winter comes, the common temperature in Sapa ranges from 10°C to 16°C. During extremely cold weather, the temperature may drop below 10°C. Therefore, in case you plan to go to this season, it’s value preparing winter clothing, resembling insulated jackets, trench coats and knitwear.
Even though it’s winter in Sapa, it doesn’t at all times snow. Snowfall every year relies on Sa Pa’s climate and frequently only occurs in mountainous areas resembling Fansipan.
Mount Fansipan: The Roof of Indochina

Although its name may make people think it has something to do with cats, Cat Cat actually comes from “CatScat”, a reputation given by the French. The locals simplified it to Cat Cat, which became the name known today.
The village offers nice walks among the many natural scenery of green forests and waterfalls, decorated with bridges stretching from one side to the opposite.
The traditional atmosphere of Cat Cat Village can also be a novel attraction. Here yow will discover picket houses with surrounding gardens, local people wearing traditional costumes, and activities resembling weaving and crafts.
Tourists can try a special dish of the H’mong ethnic group called Thang Co. It will likely be served as a soup made mainly from horse meat, although it could even be produced from beef, pork or buffalo meat.
The Sa Pa Love market offers tourists a cultural experience where they will witness traditional musical performances, tribal dances and various preserved cultural rituals. Traditional handicrafts resembling textiles, silver jewelry and various local Sapa products can be found as souvenirs.
This market takes place every Saturday night in downtown Sapa. Originally, it was not only an extraordinary market, but a gathering place for young people from various minority tribes resembling the H’mong, Dao, Tay and Giay. Young men and women wearing their best traditional clothes, brought traditional instruments resembling the khen, and gathered to sing, dance and share stories.
Although the Love Market’s function as a spot for meetings and matchmaking has disappeared, the market still exists, maintaining the traditions and culture of the minority Sapa tribes.
The Sa Pa Snow Festival is a novel winter celebration that typically takes place in the course of the peak winter season, from December to January. During the festival, the whole Sapa area is decorated with wonderful winter decorations, making a magical Christmas atmosphere with twinkling lights and icy decorations.
This seasonal festival also includes various cultural performances that mix traditional Vietnamese elements with winter themes. Minority tribes resembling the H’mong and Dao perform their traditional dances in colourful winter costumes, creating an interesting contrast between local traditions and the winter atmosphere.
Tourists can enjoy Sapa’s winter specialties resembling warming hot pot and Thang Co, in addition to various street foods served by locals.
