Chinese culinary influence in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is legendary for such delicious dishes as Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian. However, Chinese influence has played an enormous role in making various dishes in Southeast Asia so good and flavorful. Here is the Chinese culinary influence on dishes from Southeast Asian countries.

The influence of Chinese cuisine on Indonesia dates back 1000’s of years. Not only did they introduce various techniques and recipes, however it was the Chinese who taught the native Indonesians that they might fry ingredients in oil. Previously, Indonesians only cooked food in two ways: grilling and boiling.

The hottest cooking technique that the Chinese introduced to Indonesia is stir frying. This cooking technique is important to the preparation of several popular Chinese dishes in Indonesia, equivalent to Capcay, which is a stir-fried dish with vegetables often mixed with meat equivalent to chicken or beef, or Kwetiau, which is a delicious flat rice noodle dish.

There are many Indonesian dishes which might be variations of the unique Chinese dishes. Nasi Goreng, or fried rice, is a famous Indonesian dish that was introduced by the Chinese. When in Indonesia, it’s possible you’ll hear the syllable “bak” within the names of dishes equivalent to “bakmi”, “bakpao” or “bakso”. The word “Bak” itself means pork in Hokkien, but most “bak” dishes not contain pork because most Indonesians are Muslim.

Probably probably the most famous dish from Vietnam is Pho, a soup fabricated from herbs, rice noodles, broth and meat or tofu. Although Pho is a signature dish of Vietnam, it shares roots with various noodle soups from China equivalent to Chow Mein in addition to Lamian. The use of noodles, herbs and beef or chicken comes from Chinese influences.

Chinese culinary influences is also experienced in Vietnamese breads and noodles. Banh Bao is a famous Vietnamese steamed bun crammed with vegetables, egg and pork, very much like the Chinese Baozi bun. Another example is Banh Xeo, a version of a pancake from China that is often crammed with broccoli, shrimp and bean sprouts.

Thai food is so famous everywhere in the world for its delicious taste. One of probably the most famous Thai dishes is Pad Thai, a dish fabricated from rice noodles, vegetables, eggs and other additional ingredients, an ideal combination of salty, sour and sweet. Pad Thai couldn’t be made without the frying technique, which comes from China.

It is kind of clear that Pad Thai is influenced by Chinese Chow Mein. The combination of rice noodles, shrimp, peanuts and tamarind sauce reflects the harmonious and delicious combination of Thai and Chinese culinary traditions.

Malaysia has also benefited from Chinese culinary influence in its dishes. One of probably the most famous Malaysian dishes, Laksa, has a powerful Chinese influence. Laksa is a spicy noodle soup prepared with noodles, coconut milk, herbs, and a few protein sources equivalent to shrimp, fish, chicken, tofu, or a mixture of some or all of them.

There are two essential kinds of Laksa, tamarind-based Asam Laksa and coconut milk-based Curry Laksa. Curry Laksa is heavily influenced by Chinese cooking techniques in addition to spices. Laksa is the most effective Malaysian dish if you should try to experience the most effective of each Malaysian and Chinese cuisine.
