Many people have no idea that where Lake Toba is today, there was once a powerful volcano called Mount Toba. About 75,000 years ago, throughout the Paleolithic era, Mount Toba erupted, spewing an astonishing 2,800 cubic kilometers of volcanic ash and lava. Many volcanologists claimed that this was the most important volcanic eruption in all of human history, hence the name “supervolcano”.

The amount of ash was so enormous that it caused a volcanic winter that lasted a minimum of a full decade. Ashfall from the Toba supervolcano covered an area of over 38,000,000 km2 including the Strait of Malacca, the Indian subcontinent, the South China Sea, the Arabian Sea and even sub-Saharan Africa. Microscopic glass shards from Toba will be present in southern China, South Africa, Ethiopia and Malawi.

During a minimum of a decade of volcanic winter, temperatures world wide dropped to 10 degreesabout Celsius. This drastic change in climate and temperatures decimated most human populations, especially those living in tropical areas, because they’d not know the best way to survive cold weather, unlike those living in Europe, North America or East Asia.

But despite this, the volcanic winter not only caused global temperatures to drop, but in addition blocked sunlight from reaching the Earth. Because of this, it was extremely difficult to grow crops world wide, which resulted in a rise within the death toll from the famine. It is estimated that only a couple of thousand people remained on the whole planet after the top of the volcanic winter.

The eruption of Mount Toba was so huge that it destroyed the mountain itself, abandoning an enormous caldera, and water slowly filled the caldera, creating the world’s largest volcanic lake. Over time, life flourished in Lake Toba with the looks of life resembling a kind of fish found only in Lake Toba called Ikan Batak or Neolissochilus thienemanni. Humans also began to develop near Lake Toba with the arrival of the Batak Toba tribe.

Due to continuous volcanic activity hundreds of years after the eruption, an island very slowly formed in the course of Lake Toba, called Samosir, which is the fifth largest lake island on the earth. One of the Batak Toba clans, called the Samosir clan, which is a descendant of Toga Samosir, has flourished on this island for hundreds of years.
