Social networking giant Facebook Inc has received approval in principle to establish a domestic unit in Indonesia, which is Facebook’s fourth-largest user base.
Indonesia is pushing international tech firms to register locally to stop them from avoiding taxes.
Indonesia has complained that foreign web firms operate small business units to offer “ancillary” services to avoid paying minimum tax while accounting for many of their domestic revenues through a regional branch.
According to data, Indonesia, with a population of 263 million, had 88 million monthly energetic Facebook users in June 2016 Internet world statistics. “I see Facebook’s good intentions and spirit,” said Thomas Lembong, chairman of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board Jakarta Post Office. “We are eager about taxes and responsible content.”
The investment board and the communications ministry are currently considering the variety of business unit Facebook will create, Lembong said.
There are several ways to register locally within the country, including forming a limited liability company, locally often called PT (Perseroan Terbatas).
