Colombian singer Shakira who can also be a singer and songwriterWaka Waka (This Time for Africa), the official song of South Africa The 2010 FIFA World Cup posted a dance clip, apparently filmed in Bali, and Indonesia’s tourism minister seems delighted.
The international superstar shared a video on Instagram two days ago that was a repost from fellow Colombian Beto Perez, creator of the favored Zumba dance exercise.
In the video, Perez and 4 other backup dancers wearing traditional Balinese costumes display Zumba choreography to Shakira’s recent song “Perro Fiel.”
The track featuring Nicky Jam is from Shakira’s recent album El Dorado and is scheduled to be released as a single on September 8. The background looks just like the clip might have been shot within the Sanur area of Bali.
If this were the United States, perhaps Perez would have been roundly criticized for cultural appropriation by dressing in a Balinese costume to advertise his own variety of dance – in step with the present “witch hunt” trend – but Indonesian Tourism Minister Arief Yahya praised Shakira for presenting culture Balinese.
“Thank you Shakira for showing Bali to the world and for making Wonderful Indonesia worthy of a visit from a world star,” Yahya said in a press release released on Sunday, quoted by Between.
While we’re guessing that Shakira just reposted the video to advertise her recent song, the clip is an important promotion for Bali to Shakira’s 41.9 million followers, says the tourism minister, adding that 40 percent of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia enter the country via Bali.
The Minister of Tourism also took the chance to speak in regards to the excellent condition of the Indonesian tourism industry.
“We previously lost Truly Asia and Amazing Thai to Malaysia,” says Yahya, referring to Indonesia’s two big Southeast Asian tourism competitors.
“But that was before. We have now overtaken our two rivals from 2015. We have climbed to a fantastic 47th place in the world rankings, while Malaysia is at 96th and Thailand at 83rd.” – Yahya said.
