Here’s How Batik Changes Mothers’ Lives

Most parents dream of their children succeeding in life. However, for a lot of living in poverty this stays unattainable.

For Kak Noor, a mother of seven children, living conditions have improved since working at Batik Boutique.

“My dream as a mother has to be to see my children succeed. She says Our better worldstorytelling initiative of the Singapore International Foundation. “Now that I have a job, I have my own income… I can help my family.”

Batik Boutique is a social enterprise producing batik clothing, gifts, scarves and purses. It goals to offer a good and sustainable income to women living in poor urban conditions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So far, they’ve trained roughly 29 seamstresses, 10 of whom now earn a gentle income.

“I knew that sustainability was really needed to make a social impact, and that longevity was needed for women,” Amy Blair, mother of three, US immigrant and founding father of Batik Boutique.

Amy told Our Better World that she was inspired to begin Batik Boutique in 2013 after seeing how her Bahasa Melayu teacher, Kak Ana, could sew beautiful clothes and scarves from fabric.

Despite their cultural differences, the bond between Amy and the seamstresses runs deep. They also share something universal: motherhood.

As Amy puts it, “We may not wear the identical clothes or eat the identical foods… but at the tip of the day… I would like what’s best for my kids, they usually want what’s best for his or her kids just as much. kids.”

This attitude also inspires Amy to make Batik Boutique more family-friendly. Batik Boutique provides on-the-job childcare, allowing women to work without having to fret about children or travel arrangements.

Munirah can be one among the moms whose lives have modified since joining Batik Boutique. But after her training, she is one among the very best earners in the corporate.

She also teaches her daughter methods to sew, and on a deeper level, her daughter also witnesses her success.

Amy says, “When you impact a mother’s life, you impact the life of the next generation.”
