Go-Jek seeks permission to operate within the Philippines

As a part of its overseas expansion, Indonesian ride-hailing unicorn Go-Jek has just taken one other step toward entering the Philippines by establishing an area subsidiary, Velox Technology Philippines, and filing for a provisional permit to operate within the country, in keeping with a report Entrepreneur Philippines quoting Aileen Lizada, an official with the national Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Lizada, a member of the LTFRB board, was alerted by Go-Jek’s move and told local media that she had organised an inspection of the Go-Jek branch office only to seek out out, in keeping with her, that “…they have virtual employees. There are no Go-Jek employees there.”

Lizada has previously expressed concerns about allowing Go-Jek to go ahead with its plans to launch services within the Philippines, in keeping with Manila Times in May.

She noted that the foreign company “is big” and said the board can have to guard local corporations. These accredited domestic transport corporations include GoLag, HirNa, Hype, MiCab, OWTO and U-Hop.

According to the regulation, since June 2018, the Philippine Department of Transportation has designated ride-hailing and ride-sharing services as “public utility services” and that they’re “subject to full regulation and supervision” by the LTFRB. This means, amongst other things, that the board can set fares.
