Singapore and Germany enter right into a strategic partnership to strengthen peace and innovation within the Asia-Pacific region

Singapore and Germany have officially elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership to advertise peace, stability and prosperity within the Asia-Pacific region. This decision was finalized during a gathering between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz throughout the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The partnership marks a vital milestone resulting in the sixtieth anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025 and focuses on five key pillars:

  1. Defense and Security
    Strengthening military cooperation through digitalization and cybersecurity through enhanced high-level engagements and joint exercises.
  2. Trade and Digital Economy
    Expanding economic cooperation under the Sustainable Development and Innovation Framework, while supporting the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement to pave the best way for a broader EU-ASEAN trade relationship.
  3. Climate and green technology
    Cooperation on marine decarbonization, emissions trading and the event of unpolluted fuels and technologies.
  4. Science and innovation
    Launching collaborative research projects in quantum technology, green chemistry and medical innovation to drive sustainable progress.
  5. Education and Culture
    Deepening interpersonal bonds through student exchanges, skilled training and cultural cooperation with institutions corresponding to the Goethe-Institut.

Both countries also seek to strengthen EU-ASEAN inter-regional ties in digital trade, green services and provide chain resilience.

The relevant foreign ministries will oversee the initiatives to make sure their relevance and successful implementation. This collaboration reflects Singapore and Germany’s shared vision of a forward-looking, progressive partnership.
