News: Indonesia welcomes newborn endangered Sumatran rhinoceros

Good news from the world of Indonesian wildlife!
Last week, the Sumatran rhinoceros, one of the crucial endangered animals on the earth, joined Indonesia’s population. The rhinoceros, considered the smallest and hairiest of the five existing rhino species, was born on the sanctuary, marking its fourth birth.

The newborn calf, who has not yet been named, weighs roughly 27 kilograms (59.52 kilos). She was born on Saturday within the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) in Way Kambas National Park in Lampung Province, Indonesia.

The newborn rhino, covered in black fur, was in a position to get up about 45 minutes after birth. The Ministry of the Environment said in a press release that it began exploring the forest surroundings the subsequent day.

The rhino calf was born to a 22-year-old mother named Ratu. Ratu is from Lampung Province, and her 23-year-old companion, Andalas, was born on the Cincinnati Zoo in west-central Ohio. He was later moved to the identical zoo as Ratu.

The newborn and its mother are in good health because of the care of the International Rhino Foundation and the Indonesian Rhino Foundation.

This is the third successful birth for the 23-year-old and 22-year-old rhino pair, following the birth of Andat in 2012 and Delilah in 2016.

With the brand new births, the sanctuary’s rhino population now stands at nine. This is a really significant increase for this species because, in line with 2019 data from the Indonesian government, there are only about 80 Sumatran rhinoceros populations left worldwide.

Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar welcomed the news and expressed hope for more positive developments for the Sumatran rhino and other protected animals.

The Sumatran rhinoceros, also known by its scientific name Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, is the one species of rhinoceros in Asia that has two horns and might reach a height of about 1.5 meters (5 feet) and a weight of 1,102 to 2,116 kilos (500-960 lb). kilograms).
