The Asia-Pacific region is home to a complete of 161 startup ecosystems among the many world’s top 1,000, in accordance with the annual Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2021 report from Startup Blink, a startup ecosystem map and research center. The region is home to an incredibly diverse range of nations, some with over a billion people (China and India) and others with high average incomes in comparison with most countries on the planet (e.g. Australia and Singapore).
This differentiation is visible in the highest 10 country rankings, with China (seventh) and Singapore (tenth) making their first appearances. Australia, although dropping 2 places, still maintains its position in the worldwide top 10 in ninth place. Singapore and China joining the world’s top 10 is the largest news of 2021 because it is the primary time Asia is represented on this elite club.
China’s huge jump to seventh place is comprehensible: of the 40 cities representing China on the planet’s top 1,000 list, only one in all those cities (Xiamen) dropped within the rating this 12 months. Positive dynamics in Asia-Pacific spread across all sub-regions: China (East Asia) and Singapore (South-East Asia) enter the worldwide top 10, India (South Asia) re-enter the worldwide top 20, New Zealand (Australia and Oceania) ) jumps 14 places to thirty third on the planet, and Kazakhstan (Central Asia) jumps 10 places to 76th place.
