Official opening of international entry and exit checkpoints on the Myanmar-India route

On Wednesday, international entry and exit checkpoints were officially opened concurrently on the Tamu-Moreh border between Manipur and Sagaing division and on the Rihkhawdar-Zokhawthar border between Mizoram and Chin state, contributing significantly to boosting bilateral relations between India and Myanmar.

“August 8 is a vital date in Burma’s history. Today, it can also grow to be a vital date within the history of India-Myanmar bilateral relations.

“International entry and exit checkpoints were simultaneously opened this morning (August 8) at the Tamu-Moreh border between Manipur and Sagaing division and at the Rihkhawdar-Zokhawthar border between Mizoram and Chin state,” Indian ambassador to Myanmar Vikram Misri said.

“People will now have the ability to cross the India-Myanmar land border with passports and visas and can have the ability to travel for tourism, business and education purposes.

This will bring our two peoples and two countries closer together and connect our northeast rather more strongly with Myanmar, in addition to the broader ASEAN region. This is really Act East (Politics) in motion,” he added.

The move got here after India and Myanmar jointly conducted a routine survey following several media reports stating that unrest had broken out in some areas of Manipur’s Moreh sub-district following rumors of the alleged transfer of the India-Myanmar border pillar to Indian territory.

During the survey, work was agreed on the development of auxiliary pillars between the already established fundamental boundary pillars 81 and 82 along the zero line, and the agreed international boundary was also undertaken.
