Finale of the Anakut podcast: Forging Cambodia’s creative renaissance

This time we concentrate on vibrant Phnom Penh and its diverse creators who’re shaping a brand new cultural awareness of the Kingdom. With a population of over 2.2 million, the town is the most important transport hub within the country. It attracts people from every corner of the country, whether for work, recreation, access to basic services, or artistic exploration.

In this episode Globe Editor-in-Chief Andrew Haffner and co-host Dy Sereyvoleak explore Phnom Penh’s role in shaping contemporary Cambodian culture, specializing in the town’s role in bringing art, music and other creative pursuits to the eyes, ears and minds of the general public. It might not be on par with global cultural giants like New York or Paris, but it surely undoubtedly plays a key role in shaping popular tastes and media in Cambodia.

The duo looks at Phnom Penh’s growing infrastructure supporting artistic endeavors, from art and music to numerous other avenues of creative crafts. We also confer with Sok Visal, founding father of the music label and film production studio KlapYaHandz, and Yean Reaksmey, art history lecturer, curator and critic. They also met with Sievphin Chong, higher often known as his alter ego Peace Chong, an independent musician and digital culture creator. They all have unique perspectives on the evolution of Cambodian culture.

Join us for the season finale – and possibly the series finale – as we navigate the town’s vibrant art scene and its role in maintaining Cambodia’s cultural ecosystem.
