Malaysia is making history with its first 5.5G trial in Southeast Asia

On February 23, Maxis, a number one telecommunications company in Malaysia, along with Chinese technology giant Huawei, announced the success of conducting the primary test of 5G-Advanced technology in Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region.

The “5G-Advanced Trial Showcase” featured live speed test demonstrations that demonstrated 5G-Advanced’s ability to deliver ultrafast peak speeds of as much as 8 Gbps. This technology, also referred to as 5.5G, provides a tenfold increase in speeds, capability of connected devices and reduced latency in comparison with 5G. The event highlighted the extraordinary potential of 5G-Advanced technology to deliver next-generation connectivity and digital solutions that leverage ultra-high speeds, greater device connection capability, and high reliability and low latency.

Held for the primary time within the country, the exhibition at KLCC The Place aimed to display the potential of advanced 5G technology. The exhibition showcased next-generation connectivity and digital solutions that prioritize ultra-high speeds, large capability for concurrently connected devices and highly reliable low latency. Demonstration booths showcased various interactive applications of the technology, including low-latency live streaming of varied Kuala Lumpur landscapes, direct 3D content and immersive augmented reality experiences.

Tan Sri Mohamad Salim bin Fateh Din, chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), stressed that the 5.5G trials demonstrated the numerous capability of the Malaysian telecommunications sector to significantly improve communication connectivity.

Malaysia is currently developing a second 5G network, with potential collaboration with Huawei. The first network, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), is a collaboration between the federal government and major telecommunications operators, with the total support of Ericsson. After some hesitation, Maxis finally launched its 5G service in August, joining the national 5G network operated by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) from July.

Maxis claims that the cutting-edge 5.5G technology has huge potential for digitalization, automation and the Internet of Things (IoT) in various sectors. With these capabilities, the digital transformation of key industries corresponding to high-end manufacturing, automotive and smart transportation is anticipated to significantly speed up. In addition, this technology also enables state-of-the-art visual communication through the usage of 3D and augmented reality. Additionally, 5G-Advanced is anticipated to facilitate the event of more cost-effective IoT solutions.

Following this event, the 5.5G technology test will take center stage around the globe as a part of the MCMC-supported Malaysia Pavilion at this 12 months’s World Mobility Congress. The event will happen on February 26-29, 2024 in Barcelona, ​​Spain. As one among Malaysia’s leading technology firms, Maxis will represent the country at the celebrated MWC 2024, the leading and most influential connectivity event.
